Hinchliffe Mill Liberal Club

Although there is some evidence of the existence of a Liberal Club at Hinchliffe Mill it is very sparse, only a report of a meeting and the death of two of its members in WW1 show that it existed.

The club held a large meeting in the Ebenezer Chapel at Hinchliffe Mill in October 1885. At that point the chapel was no longer used as a place of worship but the seating remained and it could accommodate around 300 people.  It was estimated that at the Liberal meeting there were 250 people present, including Conservatives! The Huddersfield Chronicle reported that the residents of Hinchliffe Mill were “conspicuous by their absence” and that the Liberal members had had to drum up support from Holme and Holmfirth for the event. Mr Priestman of Bradford addressed the crowd at quite some length and was reported as “evidently wearying his audience.”

Various other prominent Liberals attended the meeting, the most significant being Henry Joseph Wilson MP for Holmfirth, who spoke on the issues of the day and questions were posed by members of the audience. Huddersfield Chronicle 10 October 1885
